Yesterday, I had the privilege of giving a talk at the AIESEC Leadership Convergence Summit.
The person who spoke before me was Gian Scottie Javelona and I found his story riveting.
The people at the conference were branding him a “19-year old CEO.” But I think this title sells him short.
Anyone can call herself CEO. Those who get enough votes in their college business simulation companies have that title. Those who inherit Dad’s business at 19 can call themselves CEO (to Dad’s Chairman of the Board).
Quick, tell me the last Filipino you know who created a product in his college years and turned it into a business?
At 19, I was busy going out with my friends, playing video games, and cramming for the next exam. This guy probably does all that as well. Oh, but he’s also creating mobile enterprise software and trying to grow his firm at the same time!
Gian isn’t just a CEO, he’s an entrepreneur.
At 19 years of age, he’s a wunderkind.
Let me tell you the best part of his story for me.
Gian’s company, Orange Apps, has created a customizable mobile portal for schools. It runs on the Android platform.
Gian had one problem when he was trying to develop the app….
He didn’t have an Android phone!
So what did he do? At first, he kept on borrowing a friend’s Android phone. Finding this too slow, he finished building a payroll system for a client, and then used the funds to buy himself an Android firm.
This, my friends, is the very essence of entrepreneurship.
His school, PUP, has since adopted his platform. Gian is now busy getting his product to other schools and expanding.
All while trying to fulfill school requirements for his impending graduation.
Amazing.

1, SIS or EVEN the PUP website, Matagal na po silang working sa kahit anong smartphone as long as may 3g or connected ka sa wifi..(eto ang una kong napansin nung prinesent mo sa seminar yang app mo, Para kasing sinasabi niyo na kung hindi dahil sa apps niyo hindi kami makakaaccess sa SIS using our smartphones, Hindi lang ako ang nakapuna neto.. marami, pero siyempre walang naglakas ng loob magsalita)
2. Way of presenting. It’s not an “innovation”.. pag sinabing “innovation” diba dapat pagbabago na talagang mapupuna ng lahat.. hindi lang ikaw, hindi lang siya, at mapupuna hindi dahil sa “Bragging rights” kundi dahil sa makikilala siya kasi naging useful talaga siya sa community..
Yung way kasi ng pagsasabi mo na isa siyang “innovation” hindi deserve para sa app mo e.. Since ang ginawa mo lang naman ay maglagay ng mga links, lagyan ng icon, interface..

I’m trying to give you the benefit of the doubt, trying to think of what possible motivation you might have in sending this comment.
Do you want to educate us on what is truly innovative?
Do you want to help out?
Do you want to help Gian out by providing constructive criticism on how he can improve his app?
By the tone of your comment, it is my opinion that you might not have the best of intentions.
Tell me, how can a comment like this help out? How can a comment like this move things forward? Are you irked by all the attention he is receiving?
Can we all just stop bringing people down?
First, on your “PINAG COMPILE MO LANG…” comment – can I ask you to check out the iOS and Android appstores? You know, they have MILLIONS of apps there which “just” compile what is already there on the net.
“Compiling” results in speed, efficiency, and a better mobile experience. Hey, I don’t need to click all these sites – it’s all in one app! There is value there. In fact, a lot of mobile apps just provide a mobile platform for just ONE internet site. Why do you think Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Mail Chimp, Yahoo Fantasy Basketball, iTunes, have mobile apps when they are all on the net anyway?
Speed, value, and a better experience.
But ultimately, for me, all this talk on “innovation” and product is beside the point.
It isn’t the product my friend that people find compelling in Gian’s case.
You know, I’ve seen the app.
Is it original? No. But then again, if you do a bit of research, you’d find that 99% of successful ideas AREN’T original. It is the execution which counts.
Is it perfect? No, not yet. But I’d bet Gian’s LEARNING and making his product better.
What people find compelling isn’t the product per se, my friend. It is Gian himself. He wasn’t afraid of taking that leap. He wasn’t afraid of saying to the world, “hey, here’s what I made,” thereby opening himself up for criticism from people like you. That leap is noteworthy and refreshing to people.
I remember when Michie Ang and Rai Escarez were telling me that when they made the LRT app, they received a whole lot of mail saying their app was useless, that it was crap.
But you know what? This just fueled them into improving it, building strategies around it, making it better.
Down the line, Gian’s product might be a failure. It might be proven to be total crap. But you know what? It doesn’t matter. All entreps face that. What WILL matter is what he will learn from it. This is what an entrepreneur is all about. And boy, what a head start he has starting this early.
If he’s getting all the pub, good for him. People want to hear about positive stories too. He can use this newfound platform to network and reach out to important people who can help him even further.
If it irks you, then that’s your problem.

Just what we need another hater with a crab mentality
I bet you also dream of being the next Bill Gates, Steve Jobs or probably the next Mark Z., I bet all computer/IT students dream to be big not just in PUP but in any school.
I did.. but the problem was I kept dreaming and dreaming and did nothing…. so now… I’m just an old fart… sitting in front of a computer… staring at the screen.
Anyway… buti nga si Gian… I bet he’s just like that.. he have dream and the only difference is that he actually woke up and tried/trying to make that dream a reality.
Even if what you’re saying is true… at least he tried what he think is better then the current system.. and continue improving it. That’s what innovation is… making something better.
And until you create your own app… even if just a “Hello World!” app. Try keep your jackassery to yourself.
Are you sure you’re from PUP-CT? If you really are, then shame on you. Instead of supporting your fellow schoolmate, you try to pull him down by throwing these “de-motivations”. Crab Mentality is what you have, tatsuma. Yes, his work may not be NEW. It may just be an application “compiling” things to MAKE IT MORE EASIER to use, just like other apps that are available on the internet. But, Gian showed his concern to his fellow schoolmates like you. Actually, he didn’t plan to make it this big, he only wanted to present a thesis as a school requirement. And, it is the people who have seen him present and appreciated his work who made this app BIG. I have known Gian ever since,, and he is a man who does big and good things but doesn’t really want to brag about it. He’s humble, in spite of the intelligence and skillfulness he possesses. So please, just stop. If you don’t have anything nice to say, just shut up. Okay lang naman if you tell him what you have in mind, but sana with respect. You said you’re no hater, but just by reading your comment, I can say that you are. If you’re really not a hater and you’re really just concerned about the ‘innovation’ you keep on repeating on your comment, then you should’ve considered leaving a helpful advice or at least a suggestion, right? Hi classmate Tatsuma, my advice to you is very simple.
If you dont like the Apps made by our very helpful schoolmate just don’t use it. that simple . nobody is forcing you to download it. Now if you like the old way it would take you 5 minutes to reach the SIS then do it. Well for for me, as far as I”m using the Apps now it just runs 3 seconds to reach the SIS. And that”s innovation.
I actually read the article and i find this kid very fascinating his really a wunderkind!! But ive seen a comment regarding his schoolmate concern, wow your comment was USELESS! Are you really his schoolmate? SHAME ON YOU BOY! The way you speak , you really show the attitude of CRAB MENTALITY.. its ok to express your opinions but make sure that will help the app to improve and actually, I find this app very helpful for you guys. not getting ur point anne, link was the term used because literally the app just links the pup sis to it. i think what tatsumi was expecting was the app to display the sis not just by linking, but by a mobile interface…

Here’s my take on the application. I’ve tried it myself on an actual phone, so what I’m giving here is an honest review of the application.
For all it’s worth, the app is okay, and it does have it perks because it saves you the time of entering the URL of the PUP website every time you wanted to check something. But beyond that, the app sadly does not provide any more ‘innovation,’ as some of the comments here claim.
What the app simply does is to redirect you to different pages in the PUP website. In other words, it gives you a browser and loads the PUP website. That’s all. I don’t think it’s much of an innovation. It speeds up things a bit, yes, but that innovation is not as big as most of you seem to make it appear.
I will enumerate the features of the app:
The app is divided into four modules, catering to different user groups. These are FACULTY, STUDENT, ALUMNI, and GUEST. Under each module, there are several features that are available. These features are discussed in more detail below:
FACULTY
1. SIS. This stands for Student Information System, an online portal for PUP students. All it does is to redirect you to the page, so that you can use it as if you were using it from a web browser.
2. News. This only redirects you to the PUP Website News section.
3. Social. There are three sections here. The first one is called Facebook. All it does is redirect you to the PUP Facebook fanpage. The second one is called Twitter. All it does is redirect you to the PUP Twitter page. The third one is called Status. It allows you to post a status via the application – this is perhaps the most advanced feature this app has to offer.
4. Profile. This shows you a static screen showing the profile of PUP.
5. Calendar. This shows you a static screen showing the schedule of activities in PUP. It is not formatted to look like a calendar, but rather a generic, linear document.
6. Office. This has two sections. The first one allows you to take a picture and store it. If I wanted to take a picture, I wouldn’t bother to launch this app – most phones’ cameras can be accessed in a few (if not single) touches. The second section is a notes taker. You can create notes, but for some reason you cannot edit notes or delete them. Once you create a note, it is stuck there forever. Pretty useless considering that all smartphones have some note-taking application that’s bug-free and can do so much more.
7. Gallery. This shows you a static screen containing some PUP campus pictures.
8. About Us. This shows you a static screen containing information about the developer.
STUDENT
The module contains exactly the same features as the faculty section. There is no point in having this.
ALUMNI
This module contains some features which are the same as those found in Student and Faculty. I will not repeat them anymore, as they are exactly the same.
1. TOR. I guess this stands for Transcript of Records. It redirects you to a PUP web page.
GUEST
This module contains some features which are the same as those found in Student and Faculty. I will not repeat them anymore, as they are exactly the same.
1. iAPPLY. This redirects you to the PUP page for application.
The app is not complex at all. All smartphone SDKs have ways to easily embed a Web View to them, allowing you to display any web page you like in a few lines of code. The other features are pretty simple as well, not to mention that the notes section even has bugs.
So what am I saying? I’m saying that no, the creator of this app does NOT deserve the spotlight that he has now. Why, you ask, does he have it? Well, there can be many factors. The main thing here is packaging. When the app is being promoted, it is being packaged as a tool for all your PUP needs. For example, the description of the app contains a line that says “PUP MOBILE PORTAL even allows you to enroll at school by just using your smart phone.”
This gives you the initial “wow” factor that the app is something very amazing. But in reality, you CAN enroll on your smart phone EVEN without this app! Because all the app does is direct you to the page of PUP where you can enroll. You can virtually achieve the same thing in your phone’s browser. So yes, it has an advantage (a few seconds saved), but the way it was packaged looked like it had a lot more to offer. So the media, and everyone else were taken in by this marketing ploy, and that’s how all this spotlight came to be.
There are also some fishy statements claimed by the creator on his interview on ANC. In it, he said that he was contacted by the school administrators because there were concerns about security in his app. This would not make sense at all, because all the app does is to download the web pages and display them. This is the equivalent of anyone accessing the web pages through a web browser! There is absolutely no security threat. I’m not saying he’s a liar, but either he ‘sensationalized’ what really happened to make it look more amazing or the school administration really just doesn’t know anything about computers.
I know that students are all happy and everything that the creator of the app got some media attention and exposure, and I too am happy that Filipino students are working hard to contribute great things. But let us look at things objectively. Most of the people here are just riding the bandwagon. You are giving your support because he is your schoolmate. Instead of talking about things like crab mentality and karma, why don’t you elaborate and defend how this app is truly a GREAT innovation aside from the few seconds that you save from opening your browser and going to the PUP site. Those are the arguments that COUNT.
There are some glaringly invalid comments here. To enumerate:

– We don’t appreciate or criticize things based on our school or our friends. We do this based on facts and logical arguments.

– Again, we don’t criticize things to bring them down. Movie reviewers don’t like everything they see, and yet they still write about them. As long as they have basis, then they’re there to provide insights for the improvement of the application. This argument looks like as if it were made by a child.
And no, I won’t use this app. But it doesn’t change the fact that it sucks.

– This is pure trash talk. It does not contribute anything meaningful to the discussion. I guess that’s something to be more shameful about.

– Learn how to use bookmarks. And that’s common sense. By the way, if it takes you 5 minutes to open your browser, you have some serious problems.

– There is a difference between retrieving the actual grade data from simply redirecting the user to the web page itself. The app doesn’t even have a profile system that automatically logs you in to the system – it just throws you at the log-in page of SIS! Iskolar ka pa naman ng bayan, and yet you argue like this.

– Look at your comment. Does it help the app to improve? No. I bet you haven’t even bothered downloading it.

– Okay, this an appeal to pity. I acknowledge his dreams and efforts, but it has nothing to do with the quality of his app. The subject here is the APP, not the creator’s personal dreams and aspirations.
Seriously, stop it with the “STOP BRINGING PEOPLE DOWN” thing. People bring you down for a reason. It’s not like a random act of violence. If you don’t want people to bring you down, make sure that you achieve excellence in everything you do. And THIS is clearly mediocre. If you just keep on counting on your blindly supportive friends who just defend you without substantial evidence, then I cannot call you a worthy achiever.
If you want to answer this comment, you better reply with facts about why his app should truly be considered a great innovation. If you are going to reply with baseless comments and lessons about morality, you might as well not waste your effort. I do not engage in meaningless discussions.

Never make lies when you want to achieve better for your product. Make it realistic. Those “false” pretenses may look awesome or stunning for “some” end-user’s point of view. Maybe because they just don’t really know a crap on how it’s done. So they’ll just blah blah blah blah blah blah. SMALL TALK. Seriously, it doesn’t mean at all or help for the improvement of it. Remember, in the developer’s point of view, we can read what you are doing. We know beyond bars. I’m watching TV from the moment you’re having an interview from the ANC. For me, this kid really has a lot more way to go. Maybe he just love to watch the “the Social Network” or Mark Z’s story. Oh well, that’s one of the effect from watching movies. But then, the inspiration is good for you. But be Gian. Not the Philippines’ Zuckerburg.
Lastly, I just want to drop some suggestions for the app. (So this comment may be treated roughly relevant.)
1. You might want to add some features like “PUP Tour” or any title that you want. Something that goes like Google map, including how to go from this campus to another campus; from this college to another college, etc. Instead of the gallery. – Very useful for freshmen. (Making it more of a better PUP portal)
2. You might also want to add features like “PUP Store” or again, any title that you want. Something that goes like e-bay. There, they can order “PUP Shirts”, “PUP Collectibles”, Accessories, etc. etc. In that way, you can monetize the app. [in effect] –> more developers to hire for the improvement of the app. More budget or funds to sustain the expenses of developing the app. – Very helpful for all entrepreneurs in your university. (Doing this is really complicated, so you might consider this as optional. Just sayin’.)
Why is this important?
Well I want to ask you, is Orange Apps gaining revenues?
Does your team receive perks? (or should i say, just fame?)
How could you accentuate the app if you lack for good developers?
What I notice is that the app is updating. Yes. It’s easy to count from 2.0 to 2.0.1 to 2.1 to so on.. and so forth. But does the team grows? Does the team grows from ones to tens to twenties and thirties? I know there are lot of “free” developers volunteering to join or collaborate with your work. Don’t hold your pride from making the move to approach them. Remember, they volunteered for it. They made the first move, so they are willing.
3. You are getting late, fame is a matter of longevity. Don’t wait for the moment that someone has made better than you. Something like “Friendster” era then turns to a “Facebook” era. Give what the end-user wants, not all of them are using Android phones. (Again, you might be able do this jump to other platforms (in a more faster way) by collaborating with those good “willing” developers.)
4. Resolve the crashing issue. The user experience is really not that fascinating.
5. (Last but not the least) You might already know of some of my suggestions. I’m just here acting as your inner conscience. Now do your job kid, I know you could read this. Prove to us that you’re worth arguing.

While reading this, it came to mind that there is a large element of Envy involved.
There’s none, It’s just that a lot of people can’t see the reality with what he really did, maybe because he’s young, that makes him one of a kind in a world of “DEVELOPERS” , even though in reality the app he made deals nothing but a bunch of links from a university website, pictures of the university, school details, bla bla bla… I think the main problem here is that a lot people thinks he’s the reason for everything, After making a lot of research about the features of his app, it turns out that the ice breaker which is “Access your grades, tuition bla bla using smart phone” is existing since the university implemented SIS (Student information System) on their university website, .. but again a lot of users, non users,”NAKIKIUSO”, journalist, non journalist, lolo, lola, ate , kuya, tatay, students(except the one who started this argument) think that he’s the one who made those stuffs.. pretty clever though, That’s the reason he became popular, not because of the whole app, without SIS , the app sucks, it crashes a lot.. He became popular because of the trick he did on presenting his achievement. I mean to think that this kid is on the “Start up” phase with this kind of attitude, imagine what kind of entrepreneur he’ll become one day.

It seems that you understand my first fact, but you failed to analyze my whole key point very well, let me help you.
I don’t think the fact that he’s the first one who thought of this concept brings a lot of impact,
Why you ask?
‘Cause technically, If you’re a developer, or a programmer,thesis student or whatsoever,
Would you waste your time creating an app that contains bookmarked link of those useful sections from a university website, when we all know that you can easily do that with your own smartphone.
I’m disappointed with the fact that this ORANGEAPP is kind of playing with a trick, everyone thinks that what they did is a pretty huge innovation.
Entrepreneurship? I don’t think so, if you really want to call yourself entrepreneur you should act professionally.
I’m not saying that the app really is a waste, but my point is , it does not have the level of INNOVATION their bragging, and my god, they’re just a bunch of kids but they already know how to play tricks in the business industry, not a very good start.
