Launching the Juan Great Leap Startup Lab!

Wheels are churning.

Over the last few years, I’ve built three successful firms with the help of some really amazing   people:

1. STORM Consulting

2. Searchlight International

3. Stream Engine Studios

It was then that I realized something – what I really wanted to do was to help people build startups! And so over the last few months, I’ve tried to crank out a system which could help me: a) manage all the existing startups, b) build a value-multiplying ecosystem, and c) create even more startups with more people!

(It was an idea I initially called Bizkitchen, but the more I thought of it, the more I realized it made more sense to do it under the Juan Great Leap platform)

The system’s wheels are slowly churning: we are set to release around 2-3 more exciting startup concepts in 2012, with several more in deep incubation.

We plan to release 4-6 startup concepts every year from hereon.

How is this lab different from Startup Accelerators like Startup Weekend or programs like Smart’s Ideaspace or Globe’s Kickstart program?

Well, for starters, you can’t “join” this lab. It isn’t event-based. We create startups in a more grassroots manner. We seek ideas and people out, then if an idea captures our imagination – we try to quickly build a company from scratch: from picking the right founders, to testing the idea using lean startup methodologies, to releasing MVP’s, and ultimately launching. The approach is very organic.

Another very different mindset we have is the inclination towards the bootstrapped approach. One trend we see now is the immediate tendency for entrepreneurs to approach investors, usually sacrificing equity, control, and freedom.

Sometimes, funding is exactly what a business needs to start. Sometimes though, it just isn’t. You CAN bootstrap and be profitable (take a look at this). You can retain equity and control and love what you’re doing. It should always be the first option. At the very least, you can create traction, which in turn, creates a whole lot more bargaining power for you at the investor’s negotiation table.

So wait, if I have an idea for a startup, can this incubator help me?

Yep. And you don’t need to join any event, or do a pitch, or submit a business plan. All you need to do is to email me at pcauton@yahoo.com and request a coffetalk with me.

We can help you:

refine the idea

outline a plan of attack

set you up with co-founders (if you need)

manage your back-end functions: admin, HR, accounting, etc…

recruit your first, critical employees

set-up your first office within our premises or outside

share contacts and resources with ALL the member startups

source your funding

create a calendar of transition from part-time to fulltime in the startup

test your ideas using lean startup methodology

So what are you waiting for? Take one great leap!

We’ll help you piece your unique startup puzzle together

Interested in $25,000.00 funding and the chance to go on a US-based 12-week accelerator program?

Hey people! Got a tech startup? Need funding and guidance? This might be interesting…

Ohio-based Launchhouse is launching the Launchhouse Accelerator Program.

The LaunchHouse Accelerator is inviting the world’s brightest entrepreneurs to participate in a 12-week Accelerator program. Selected teams will receive $25,000 in funding and will be surrounded with experience-based lab sessions, world-class mentors from their specific industry, an innovative work environment, dinners with successful entrepreneurs, and networking with mentors.

To apply, entrepreneurs need to be in a tech-related field with a team of two or three co-founders. Ten teams will be selected for the 12-week program in September.

Teams will relocate to Cleveland, OH for 12 weeks to work in LaunchHouse’s 23,000 square foot Silicon Valley-esque space. Its furniture and colorful, collaborative work space promotes genius and impromptu brainstorming sessions, day or night, with awesome, like-minded people.  Accommodations will also be sponsored by LaunchHouse.

The LaunchHouse Accelerator program aims to help entrepreneurs take their ideas to validation during the length of the program. LaunchHouse’s development methods are customer-centric, meaning that from the very beginning you are engaging your market. At the end of 12 weeks, each team will present to local and national Venture Capitalists and Angel Investors on our Showcase Day on November 28.

Entrepreneurs can apply here.

Documenting the first JUANGREATMEET

WHAT: Juan Great Meet

WHERE: Astoria Plaza

WHEN: March 27, 2012

We were around 40 people packed in the Chelsea Room of Astoria. I started out with profusely thanking everyone who came.

I gave a short talk entitled, “The 5 EPIC fails which almost did us in,” which detailed the 5 worst mistakes we’ve ever done in our startup – these were also pretty much the 5 biggest lessons we had to learn.

Incidentally, the five were the following:

1) Bad hiring

2) Failing to listen to customers

3) Failing to think big

4) Saying yes to everything

5) Failing to plan for our own obsolescence

Here’s a short excerpt regarding hiring:

After some Q&A with me, we proceeded to the highlight of the night!

The group was divided into 6 subgroups. Each person had to answer the 2 questions: 1) What is the biggest challenge you are facing in your startup process, and either 2a) What help do you need? or 2b) What’s the best advice you could give?

Since a third of the group already were doing their startups and around two-thirds of the group were in the process or didn’t know where or how to start – the conversations which ensued were scintillating. Interestingly, the random groupings somehow turned out to be the best configuration possible – the right people met with the right people.

The room just had an unbelievable vibe and energy – people were talking excitedly about their plans, their startups, and advice. More importantly, people were doing resolutions: to start something, to help one another, to help push the cause further. So many exciting plans were laid out.

In the end, I had to kick people out of the room because we went way way beyond the allowed venue hours! That didn’t stop people from conversing along the corridors, however 🙂

Amazing night. Can’t wait to see where this goes.

Juan Great Night!

Was going to do my event update post tomorrow, but I couldn’t help post something right now. Amazing night! Thank you so much everyone for your passion, your energy, and your time!

I was so inspired by everyone’s stories and learned so much!

Amazing, amazing night! More startups please!

5 EXTRA SLOTS for Juan Great Meet, March 27, Astoria Plaza

The 30 original slots for Juan Great Meet on March 27, 2012, Astoria Plaza are now filled up.

We’ll be allotting five (5) extra slots for those who still want to go, so please send me an email at pcauton@yahoo.com to reserve your slot. We cannot allow anymore slots after this because of venue capacity.  Again, for those who confirmed, I trust you, so please don’t flake 🙂

I’m excited to see everyone!

Juan Great MEET: 7pm, March 27, Astoria Plaza

Okay. I’ve postponed this long enough.

Let’s meet.

I know a number of you have wanted to meet up – I’m so sorry if I haven’t replied with a definitive schedule on a coffee talk just yet, as my schedule’s been crazy. I pray you’d be okay with this in the meantime.

Let’s not complicate things. I’ll just give a short short sharing of My Own Startup story, we’ll have a Q&A portion, and then it’s Mingle Time. I’ll invite a handful of other entrepreneurs and founders who want to help out so the learning experience and exchange would be at a maximum.

It’s going to be free, of course 🙂 Sagot ko na muna.

If you’ve been sitting on your behind just reading posts and don’t know where to start, this might be a great way to kickstart your process.

If you’ve recently founded a startup and have some questions, then it might be a good venue to get some advice, network, and even help out.

If you’re in the process of starting up, then it might be a good place to find a support group who will listen and help out.

I’ve reserved a room for around 30 people, so the atmosphere would be more intimate and comfortable. Obviously it will be limited seating. So if you are bringing friends, please bring people who are seriously interested in startups. You can leave your significant other just this once, so we can maximize the slots for truly interested people (assuming your partner isn’t a startup enthusiast like you).

Also, if you are say you are going, please don’t flake. I trust you and I will reserve a place for you if you are among the first to reserve.

No need for a Facebook event page, I think. Let’s again make this simple. If you want to go, shoot me an email at pcauton@yahoo.com ASAP and tell me how many you will be. First 30 people get in. That’s it.

9-day total views: 1140! Let’s continue to spread the word about taking leaps!

9-day views

I’m not really an experienced blogger, so I’m not really sure if this number is relatively crappy or not. But I really only expected a handful of readers, especially for the first week, so I am pretty psyched with this number!

I am honored and humbled that people are actually reading what I’m posting. I know time is expensive and important, so thank you for spending some of your time visiting and reading.

I do think this is a cause that’s worthwhile to be trumpeted.

Do help me spread the word.

Thanks so much!
